We announced that SafeRun BCN has been approved. Now, here is what we are actually building.
A dark underpass, a street without lights, an empty park after sunset: none of this appears on any map, so every woman who runs discovers these places on her own. We are building a free web app where women rate the streets of Barcelona by how safe they really feel. The ratings add up to a public "heat map" of the city, from green to red, with separate views for daytime and after dark.
How it works:
- While running, one tap: "safe" or "unsafe", plus a reason icon: poor lighting, nobody around, a broken streetlight. Two seconds.
- After the run, you can rate your route section by section.
- Anyone can open the map before going out and see how each area feels at that hour.
Nothing to download, no registration, no personal data collected. Individual ratings are never shown, only the overall picture. The interface is in Spanish, Catalan and English.
Over 12 months we will collect at least 500 ratings, hold monthly runs and walks, and hand the results to the City Council in a "State of Safety Report". The code will be published open source.
We are looking for partners. Running clubs and women's groups: join our Social Runs and add ratings during your own sessions. District offices: tell us which data format is useful for you. Local businesses and media: help us spread the word.
A safer street is safer for everyone, not only for runners.
